Hugh Bickford

SARANAC LAKE - Hugh H. Bickford, 92, of 20 Neil Street, died Sunday morning at the General Hospital of Saranac Lake. He had been a lifelong resident of the area.

Mr. Bickford was born July 1, 1889 in Seveys, the son of James and Emma Preston Bickford. He was married to the former Gladys M. Jessmer in 1910.

The Bickfords had been married for 72 years and were honored as the Tournament of Roses winners on Paul Harvey's News and Commentary last year.

Mr. Bickford had been employed as a greenskeeper at the Lake Placid Club, and later worked in that capacity for the state Department of Environmental Conservation. He also worked at the Marjorie Mernweather Post Camp Topridge before retiring in 1974.

For many years, he had been involved in the construction of the Mount Van Hoevenberg bobsled run and was also involved in construction projects at several state campsites.

Mr. Bickford was an avid hunter and sportsman, as well as being an excellent golfer and baseball player.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Joyce Yousey of Lowville and Mrs. Thirza Stearns of Saranac Lake; two sons, Hugh of Naples. Fla. and James of Rainbow Lake. 11 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

He will repose at the Fortune Funeral Home this evening from 7 to 9 and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and from 7. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will beheld Wednesday al 11 a.m. at the Fortune Funeral Home with Gene Stanley, pastor of the North Country Christian Center, officiating.

Interment will follow in North Elba Cemetery.
